과거에도 세대 간에는 변화가 있었고 새로 발생한 문화나 질서 그로 인해 변화된 관계에 관한 고민들은 사라진 적이 없었다. 어른들은 항상 다음 세대를 이해하기 어려웠고 변화는 언제나 우리의 성숙보다 한 발씩 빨랐다. 그것들이 밀물처럼 몰려왔을 때에야 우리는 비로소 ‘변화’를 감각하고 생각한다. 그리고 그것들은 또 어디론가 흘러간다.
서지수는 그런 변화의 흐름 중 현재 자신이 경험하고 있는 현실과 가상 공간의 관계에 주목한다. 온라인과 오프라인으로 나뉘던 시기는 이제 온 오프의 속성을 넘어 ‘공간, 사회’로서의 물리적 개념까지 함축한 ‘가상 공간’과 ‘현실’의 구분으로 확장되었다. 서지수는 이 개념의 관계를 자신이 경험하는 가장 밀접한 현상으로 표현한다. 그 중 하나는 일상적으로 두 속성의 공간을 넘나들며 겪는 기이한 익숙함과 낯섦에 관한 것인데, 이번 전시 <Face Face>에서 그 기이하고 미묘한 감각을 존재하지 않으나 있을 법한 가상의 얼굴들을 현실에 들여놓음으로써 드러낸다. 전시장에 있는 모든 얼굴, 사람은 그 어디에도 존재하지 않는다. 무작위 합성에 의해 생성되었다고는 믿기지 않을 만큼 익숙하다. 누군가 각 얼굴에 이름을 붙여주었다면 우리는 의심의 여지없이 ‘존재하는 그’를 보고 있는 경험을 했을 것이다. 현실에서 관계한 누군가를 가상공간에서 디지털 이미지로 마주했을 때 알 수 없는 낯섦을 경험한다는 서지수는 이 미묘한 감각의 오차와 균열에 대해 부정하지 않는다. 부정하기보다 오히려 이 균열이야말로 매 순간 두 가지 다른 속성을 구별하고 사유하게 하는 하나의 계기로써 작용할 수 있다고 말한다.
가상공간과 현실, 이제는 이 두 개념을 나누는 일이 큰 의미가 없을 만큼 두 영역은 서로의 삶에 녹아 상호작용하며 발전하고 있다. 현실의 제약을 넘는 가상 공간을 통해 현실의 경험과 성장을 가능하게 하고 가상 공간은 현실의 감각들을 차용하고 인용하여 그 세상을 더 폭넓게 확장하고 있다. 이런 현재 속에서 중요한 것은 밀물에 휩쓸리기 이전에 밀물의 변화를 보다 더 잘 인식하는 것이 아닐까. 서지수는 가상 공간을 ‘무기’같다고 표현했다. 무기는 휘두르는 사람에 의해서 그 존재 가치가 결정된다.

Changes between the generations that took place in the past and concerns over new cultures and order and the subsequent changes in relations have always remained. Grown-ups always find it difficult to understand the next generation and changes always seem to occur a step earlier than our maturity. When the changes flow in our lives like the rising tide, we finally realize these “changes” and consider them. Then, such changes flow in a random direction again.
Of such flows of changes, Jisoo Seo focuses on the relationship between the reality and the virtual space she currently experiences. The division between the online and the offline has been expanded to the division between the virtual space and reality, which implies the physical concept of “space, society” by moving beyond the characteristics of the online and the offline. Jisoo expresses the relationship between such concepts with the phenomena that she experiences in a condensed manner. One of them is akin to the eerie familiarity and strangeness that we experience by crossing over the two spaces in daily life. This exhibition, “Face” reveals such an eerier and subtle sense by introducing virtual faces, which do not actually exist but still seem likely to exist, into reality. None of the faces and persons in the exhibition hall exists anywhere. They feel so familiar that it is difficult to believe that they were created by random composites. If someone named each face, we would have the experience of looking at “someone who exists” without any doubt. Jisoo, who talks about her experiences of the enigmatic strangeness when meeting someone as digital images in the virtual space whom she has a relationship with in reality, does not deny an error and a rupture between such subtle senses. Rather than denying them, she thinks that such a rupture can serve as an opportunity to distinguish the two different characteristics and contemplate them in every moment.
Now, the two spheres—the virtual space and reality—are fused, interact and develop in everyone’s life, making it insignificant to distinguish the two concepts. The virtual space, which transcends the limitations of reality, enables experiences and growth in real life and borrows and cites senses from reality to expand the world. What is important in the present may lie in better understanding the tide of changes before being swept away by the tide. Jisoo expresses virtual reality as “weapons,” and the value of the weapons is decided by the person who wields them.
